Choosing the right area code for your AI number

Local vs toll-free, why answer rates differ, and when to pick what.

Default: pick your local area code

Local area codes get answered ~32% more than toll-free numbers in residential service businesses, per the BIA Advisory Services 2024 SMB Call Index. Callers trust a 313 or 248 number more than an 800.

What if I don't operate in one area code?

Pick the area code where you do the most business, or the one your existing line uses. If you have multiple service areas, get multiple numbers (one per area) and assign each to its own organization in the dashboard.

When toll-free makes sense

Toll-free is right for: national businesses, businesses where customers travel to you (specialty medical, destination services), or any business where you want callers to know you cover a large geography.

What about porting my existing number?

Number porting is possible but adds friction — 3-5 days of downtime risk, and porting away from a carrier sometimes results in temporary service issues. Better path: keep your existing line, get a new local AI number, and use forwarding. Almost no customer notices the difference.
